bag 01
Leather bag concept and prototype, 2017
Inspired by the wabi sabi aesthetic, shibari rope binding techniques and the ultra-noir artworks of Pierre Soulages and Richard Serra, the material exploration behind this bucket bag set out to create complex rhythm and movement through repetition and the juxtaposition of simple and modest shapes.
Exploring how performance artists like Pina Bausch use movement and rope, as well as how intricate shibari knots give rope dimension and movement, the project was also concerned with finding different ways of tying strap to bag and bag to body.
The initial research set out to explore the tactility and texture of everyday materials like paper, cardboard and ink, as well as rhythmical patterns and disturbances made through simple gestures, almost accidentally.
